The Science of Ascension: A Neurologically Grounded Theory of Mystical/Spiritual Experience

Published in Manuscript (Version .90), 2024

Abstract
After reviewing psychological and sociological approaches to mystical experience, this manuscript develops a syncretic, neurologically grounded theory of “connection experience.” It argues that connection events are linked to suppression of the Default Mode Network (DMN), then proposes measurement strategies (the Q-Scale), outlines how “Q” can be used as dependent/independent variable, and maps an empirical research agenda intended to bridge disciplines and traditions.

Key Points

  • Reframes mystical experience as connection experience to support cross-disciplinary dialogue.
  • Roots the mechanism in DMN suppression and associated changes in self-processing.
  • Introduces/extends measurement (Q-Scale) and research design suggestions using “Q.”
  • Aims for theory usable by both scholars and practitioners without mystification.
