How the conservative right hijacks religion

Published in The Conversation, 2019

In this article, I argue that when progressives dismiss or neglect religion/spirituality, they leave a vacuum that the conservative right fills — aligning faith with commercial, political and elite interests. The piece elaborates how spirituality is not inherently ill-fitting with science or progressive values; rather, when religious discourse is captured by the right, it becomes a tool for cultural and ideological control. The article calls for renewed progressive engagement with spirituality and religion in order to reclaim narrative space and resist elite appropriation.
