Case Study: eduSource and the Athabasca University Digital Library Project

Published in ASTD (original submitted article), 2004

This case study explores Athabasca University’s participation in the eduSource project, a pan-Canadian initiative to build an interoperable network of learning object repositories based on international standards.

Key contributions from AU included:

  • Development of ADLib, a standards-compliant metadata repository application.
  • Creation of the Digital Reading Room (DRR), an online repository of course materials.
  • Tools such as the MARC–IEEE LOM converter, intelligent agents for FAQs, broken link checking, and learning object recommendations.
  • Open source APIs and services for metadata validation, identifier resolution, and Java bindings for LOM standards.

The project demonstrated AU’s commitment to putting all of its courses online and provided a foundation for interoperable, standards-based e-learning repositories across Canada and internationally:contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}.
